Professional Summary

Melanie Chiurliza graduated from Florida International University's Political Science undergraduate program in 2020 with a minor in International Relations. She went on to participate in a summer program in 2018 at Ritsumeikan University as a Gilman Scholar while pursuing a Japanese Studies Certificate. Upon her return, she was hired at the Miami-Dade Public Library System and was also accepted as an Intern at the Florida Delegation, Southeast U.S./Japan Association, Inc. In both these positions, she has been able to obtain experience in clerical duties, customer service, among other skills.

Library Page at Miami-Dade Public Library System

  • Organized library items in correspondence to the Dewey Decimal System

  • Assisted patrons in person and over the phone in search of items using the library’s database 

  • Classified new items within the library’s catalog and database

  • Coordinated various events and activities held at the library alongside coworkers

  • Distributed Reemployment Assistance forms alongside coworkers during the COVID-19 pandemic

  • Aided members of the community in finding information regarding COVID-19 tests, vaccination, and other resources

Interests

Melanie has an interest in diplomacy, especially in the continued fortification of American and Japanese ties. She also has a passion for human rights, studying foreign languages, and the effects of national soft power. Melanie is also fascinated by how psychology, language, culture, and politics intersect. Whenever Melanie is not studying or working shifts at the public library, she enjoys knitting and creative writing.
